Have your say
Takbir Uddin is not your ordinary student. At just 22 years of age he has written a play entitled Ammah which was influenced by his own experiences and the problems and attitudes towards mixed race relationships.

He says of the play: “I’m in a mixed race relationship and I know I’m not alone. I wanted to get the message across that these things happen and we have to accept it and move on to bring cultures closer together.”

Takbir, who lives in Great Haywood, near Stafford, had his play performed by a company of professional actors as part of the theatre’s Transmissions young writer’s festival.

The young playwright is currently in his final year at Dartington College of Arts. He has previously collaborated with Staffordshire-based The Red Theatre Company and Yehlehleh Young Persons Theatre Company.

Takbir has been writing his play alongside other young writers at the theatre over the last year.

Transmissions
The REP’s young writers scheme, Transmissions, has been running for 6 years. It gives young writers the opportunity to develop their ideas for a play with the help of other established playwrights and actors.

The end result is a performance of their play by professional actors in The REP’s studio theatre, The Door.

Over the three weeks of the Transmissions festival the work of some 21 talented young writers aged 12 to 26 was showcased.

There were also plays written by pupils from some of the region’s inner city schools.
