History of Radio Stoke

Can you tell us more about the people, the places, the action in these photos? Do you have stories of Radio Stoke in its first years?

I remember beeing a volenteer on a programme for radio Stoke, it was called "Down to Earth". I think. It covered religious news and events. Sue Booth was the Producer.

Mike taught me to edit on one of those big reel to reels. Although he isn't editing in picture 21 as there is no editing block! In those days it was as low tech as a chinagraph pencil to mark the tape, a razor to cut it and splicing tape.... still works but very laborious. He is probably just teeing up to play the edited tape in at the right moment.

Picture 20 is Penkhull Church. The people pictured are l - r: Gay Penell, Neil Arrowsmith, Mike Whittaker, Phil Littler, Chris Whittaker (Nee Lane), George Heath, Radio Stoke Producer, Tony Littler, Albert Arrowsmith. John Cordeaux, who lived in Penkhull, arranged this broadcast around 1970.
