Broken chain ends Yee's Supertri hopes in Jersey

Olympic champion Alex Yee vowed to focus on the World Triathlon Championships after a broken bike chain cost him the chance of victory in the Supertri Pro Series Final in Jersey.

Yee was up against New Zealand's Hayden Wilde for the first time since storming to victory in Paris two years ago.

But, as the two raced as part of the leading pack, Yee's chain snapped on the second bike leg of the race around St Helier's Waterfront, costing him the chance to win and meaning he was unable to finish.

"These things happen sometimes," said Yee, who will race in Spain for the world title later this month.

"Some things are out of your control - you can decide to get upset about things you can't control or you can move forward and do what you can control," he added to BBC Radio Jersey.

"We've got another opportunity to be on the line with these guys and I'll do my best to be competitive again."

Australia's Matt Hauser went on to win the men's title, seven seconds ahead of Wilde with Mitch Kolkman from the Netherlands third.

France's reigning Olympic champion Cassandre Beaugrand won the women's race 19 seconds ahead of Great Britain's Georgia Taylor-Brown with Luxembourg's Jeanne Lehair third.

"It was a good choice to race," said Beaugrand. "I could stop my season right now as I've done everything I wanted. It's been a pretty special season."

The home crowd also had the chance to cheer on Jersey's Siena Stephens, who was racing with the elite women but she was eliminated after the first leg of the race.

"It was a really hard race, but I really attacked the swim and I'm really proud of the way I did that to come out fifth," Stephens told BBC Radio Jersey.

"I was hanging on after that, for me to get through one round is still amazing considering who I'm up against - to even be a minute and a half away from the Olympic champion is really cool."
