  3. What's happened so far today?published at 20:07 BST 26 May

    • Jacob Fearnley lost in straight sets to Juan Manuel Cerundolo, meaning there are no British players remaining in the men's singles.
    • Earlier, Cameron Norrie was forced to retire injured from his first-round match against Paraguay's Adolfo Daniel Vallejo - the first time he has done so at a Grand Slam. The British number one, who sustained a rib injury in the build-up to Roland Garros, was a set and a break down when he elected to end the match.
    • High seeds Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Bublik both went out in the first round - Medvedev was beaten in five sets by Australian wildcard Adam Walton. Another wildcard, 17-year-old Frenchman Moise Kouame, defeated veteran Marin Cilic in straight sets.
    • World number one Aryna Sabalenka, defending champion Coco Gauff and multiple Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka all won their first-round matches in straight sets.

  5. Fearnley's 'fluctuations really hurt him'published at 20:01 BST 26 May

Wow. That was quite tense at the end there.

Very entertaining to watch the nerves jangling between the two of them and there were many twists and turns in terms of how it was being played.

We saw Jacob Fearnley at times in his shell and we saw him with his back against the wall and really coming up with the goods with the forehand with back of the line winners. We saw him play many different types of tennis today.

Cerundolo clearly is the more experienced player on the clay courts - he knew how to navigate his way through the match and he moved better than Fearnley. But he was getting so tight to finish off the match but Fearnley wasn't able to capitalise.

The fluctuations Fearnley had in the match really hurt him.

    Breaking

    Fearnley 2-6 6-7 (0-7) 6-7 (7-9) Cerundolo

A weak return from Jacob Fearnley means it's match point again for Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

And this time, the Argentine makes no mistake, and books his place in the second round, where his opponent could well be world number one Jannik Sinner.

But it's over and out for Fearnley, which means Britain's three male players in the singles have all lost in the first round.

  9. Fearnley edges ahead in tie-breakpublished at 19:50 BST 26 May

    Fearnley 2-6 6-7 (0-7) 6-6 (5-4) Cerundolo*

Jacob Fearnley just misses the line and goes to the change of ends 4-2 down.

But the Scot then produces some excellent defence and suddenly things look very different.

Juan Manuel Cerundolo is looking jittery and loses three points in a row to go behind for the first time in the tie-break.

  10. Sinner up by an early breakpublished at 19:47 BST 26 May

    *Sinner 2-1 Tabur

The winner of Jacob Fearnley's match will face world number one Jannik Sinner in the second round, barring a seismic shock on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

The Italian, who is seeking to complete a career Grand Slam over the next fortnight, broke world number 171 Clement Tabur in the opening game of the match and had break points for a 3-0 lead - but Frenchman Tabur recovered to get himself on the scoreboard.

Meanwhile, fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime has won the second set to level his match with Daniel Altmaier.

  12. Cerundolo races ahead in tie-breakpublished at 19:44 BST 26 May

Just as in the previous set, it's Juan Manuel Cerundolo who takes the early initiative in the tie-break.

  13. Cerundolo holds to earn tie-breakpublished at 19:42 BST 26 May

    *Fearnley 2-6 6-7 (0-7) 6-6 (0-0) Cerundolo

Jacob Fearnley shakes his head after dumping a second-serve return into the net - that would have made it 0-30 on Juan Manuel Cerundolo's serve.

Instead, the Argentine wins the next four points, and we're into another tie-break.

Fearnley's looking to do more damage and he's making more plays, whereas Cerundolo looks quite content just to get the ball back into play and is playing more defensively.

There's a bit of tension as Jacob Fearnley finds himself at 30-30 but the Scot comes through the danger.

Both players are looking a bit nervy now but Juan Manuel Cerundolo holds to extend the set.

The match ticks over the two-and-a-half hour mark - but it could have a while to go yet.

  17. Sinner's bid to make historypublished at 19:31 BST 26 May

    Sinner v Tabur

Very shortly, Jannik Sinner will begin his bid to make history.

He's going for the career Grand Slam in Paris, with the French Open the only major title missing from his collection.

The top seed is the heavy favourite at this year's Roland Garros and he'll be keen to avoid an early slip-up against world number 165 Clement Tabur this evening.

You could sense Cerundolo is feeling a bit of nerves and pressure trying to close out that match. He was getting more animated and nervy at the back - his body language is giving away lots of stuff.

  19. Brave hold from Fearnleypublished at 19:29 BST 26 May

    Fearnley 2-6 6-7 (0-7) 5-4 Cerundolo*

Jacob Fearnley's serve appears to be crumbling under the pressure but he manages to recover it just in time.

The Scot has to save three break points but comes through the game.

Now the pressure is back on Juan Manuel Cerundolo, who will serve to stay in the third set.

Maybe there is someone working with Fearnley on the psychological but for me, this is all psychological and not the tennis. He has a lot of great tennis in him.

It's about the psychology and the run of patterns that keep happening.
