Tai wins gold, Morgan and Greenbank on podium

Alice Tai clinched gold for England in convincing fashion in the women's 100m backstroke S9, while Oliver Morgan and Luke Greenbank were in the medals in the men's 200m backstroke.

Tai, 27, successfully defended her 2022 Commonwealth Games title by finishing 2.13 seconds clear of Australia's Gemma Sellic, who claimed silver, and more than three seconds ahead of Sellic's compatriot Victoria Belando Nicholson in third place.

"I just went and swam my own race and I'm grateful that it got me a gold," said Tai.

"Throughout my whole career, my relationship with swimming has been quite turbulent, and it's only really since Paris that I loved it again like I did when I was 12 or 13, so it's really special."

Greenbank, who was England's flag bearer in the opening ceremony, set the fastest qualifying time in the semi-final of the men's 200m backstroke but finished 2.36 seconds behind South African winner Pieter Coetze.

The 28-year-old was narrowly beaten to the silver medal by his team-mate Morgan by just 0.14 seconds.

Morgan, 23, who is competing at his first Commonwealth Games, has now claimed three silver medals, following on from second-place finishes in the 50m backstroke and 4x100m freestyle team relay.

Greenbank, who is from Cumbria, told BBC Sport: "In terms of the time I wanted more and I expected more, but it's a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games.

"I'm not going to be too upset with that. I'm really happy. Just glad to be on the podium. It's almost a bit of a relief, I haven't medalled at a major championships since 2022 so it's great to be back up there."
