Glenn Irwin has stood on the British Superbike podium at Knockhill, one year to the day from an accident at Snetterton that left him with a pelvic injury.

The Ducati rider finished third in the opening race in Scotland behind Scott Redding and race winner Kyle Ryde.

Last year, Irwin crashed in practice at Snetterton that left him with pelvic injuries that sidelined him for almost two months and ended his championship challenge.

An emotional Irwin, 36, said he was crying as he took the chequered flag in third place on Saturday.

Two more races take place at Knockhill on Sunday.

"I have never done that before in BSB and it meant so much today," Northern Ireland's Irwin told BSB.

Irwin was racing for PBM Duacti at the time of his accident and switched to Nitrous Competitions Racing for his return in August and the current season.

He won the opening Superbike race at the North West 200 road race in May but his podium at Knockhill is his first in the British Superbike Championship since his injury.

Irwin added that the injury sustained in the accident at Snetterton last year was "brutal".

"It has become more real now, as last year was a tough moment and the toughest injury I have ever had.

"I have had multiple injury crashes, so many injuries, but this one was brutal. A massive thank you to the whole team and also to my previous team."
