Penalty costs Dunne and hands Camara Baku F2 win

A five-second penalty cost Alex Dunne a second Formula 2 victory in Azerbaijan, and handed the win to title rival Rafael Camara.

The Irish driver was penalised for crossing the white line on the entry of the pit lane when making a change for tyres mid-race.

So while the Alpine junior driver took the chequered flag in Baku in first place, he fell behind Camara and fellow title challenger Nikola Tsolov in the race order after the penalty was applied.

A third podium of the weekend kept Dunne firmly in title contention but he is now 18 points behind Camara in the standings.

The 20-year-old had dominated the first feature race on Friday for this first win of the season, and had also taken third place in the sprint race earlier that day.

It was a strong recovery from Red Bull junior driver Tsolov, who had crashed out of the first feature race on Friday.

But Ferrari Academy driver Camara emerged from Baku with the title advantage with a seven-point lead over the Bulgarian, and Dunne is still in touch in third place despite the penalty.

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East means there is uncertainty around the final two rounds of the Formula 2 calendar, which are due to be staged in Qatar and Abu Dhabi in November and December as support races for Formula 1.

Imola in Italy has been reported to be a possible replacement should the final two rounds of the season not go ahead, but it is still uncertain how the end to the Formula 2 season would be impacted.
