Devils back to winning ways in cup against Panthers

Cardiff Devils returned to winning ways in the Challenge Cup with a 5-3 win over Nottingham Panthers.

The Welsh side, who were well beaten by Guilford Flames last time out, survived a late Panthers comeback before Joey Martin scored to seal the win.

Devils led 4-1 after a succession of early third period goals from Gleason Fournier, Josh MacDonald and Nolan Yaremko, before Panthers responded through Benjamin Corbeil and Zach O'Brien to bring the match within a point.

But forward Martin extinguished any nerves at Vindico Arena by scoring Cardiff's fifth of the evening with 48 seconds left on the clock.

Devils have a record of three wins and two defeats from their five Challenge Cup games and head to Sheffield Steelers on Saturday, 26 September.

Panthers have won just once in the cup and start their Elite League campaign against Manchester Storm on Saturday.
