Conversations around a ‘third’ midfielder following the arrivals of Tielemans and Andrey Santos are complicated by the positive pre-season performances of Mason Mount in the number eight role.

Carrick evidently wants to adopt a more possession-based approach this season, which suits Mount. The argument against that is his patchy injury record. However, interest in highly-rated Leicester midfielder Louis Page has led to suggestions – unconfirmed by the club – that he could be the ‘third’ man.

That leaves left-back.

Luke Shaw started all 38 Premier League games last term. But with Patrick Dorgu viewed primarily as an attacking player, the back-up is either Noussair Mazraoui – who started at right-back against PSG on Saturday – or Diogo Dalot.

I would regard them as fill-ins. Shaw doesn’t have the greatest injury record and has entered the final year of his contract.

Newcastle don’t seem to be keen to sell Lewis Hall and there has been speculation around Miles Lewis-Skelly from Arsenal.

That is the area I think United will reinforce.

Adrian, Somerset: Are Man United actively trying to bring anyone else in or are we done?

I don’t think Manchester United are ‘done’, Adrian, no. Or at least if they are, they will be disappointed with the outcome.

What United has done is make a very good job of staying under the radar.

A conversation with someone senior at United about growing concern among the fanbase about lack of signings since Youri Tielemans’ £35m move from Aston Villa was confirmed on 14 July was a simple reply that the club should be judged at the end of the window.

That certainly gave the impression of more business being done.

Andrew, New Forest: Why do / can some teams decide not to disclose the transfer fee?

Undisclosed transfer fees are really just a way of clubs keeping their cards close to their chest.

It means rivals do not know how much of your transfer budget Team A has spent, nor do they now how much Team B has to re-invest in a replacement player.

It all seems quite pointless in the modern era, where we generally get to hear about most transfer fees through agents or other sources.

Then there are the deals done with overseas clubs who are listed on the stock market, such as Lyon and Juventus. A Premier League club might list a deal as undisclosed, then the other club has to tell the stock market the exact fee and any variables. There's even less point in the English club holding back the details of the deal, but they still do.

Iain, Brighton: Why haven’t Liverpool gone for someone like Jarrod Bowen from West Ham? He is exactly what they need on the right wing!

Liverpool have been interested in Bowen previously under Jurgen Klopp but now at 29, signing him wouldn’t fit in line with their model of seeking value in the market and identifying and recruiting emerging talent.

Besides, Bowen signed a revised West Ham contract last month.

Additionally, there is a genuine belief inside Anfield that Rio Ngumoha could be a star for years to come so investing in someone like Bowen could hinder his progress. Ngumoha, who usually plays down the left, has featured on the right during pre-season.

There is still an admiration of Bowen’s qualities and the proven Premier League experience he would bring as Liverpool are yet to replace Mohamed Salah but in that respect, PSG'S Bradley Barcola is the primary candidate after Liverpool missed out on Yan Diomande.

Nottingham Forest

Ousmane Diomande spent three years in Portugal with Sporting CP and won the domestic double with the club.

Nottingham Forest Executive George Syrianos said they are "excited to welcome" the 22-year-old:

“He has fantastic experience for a defender of his age. Playing a crucial role in title winning teams and going into the latter stages of the Champions League puts him in a great position to integrate well here at Forest.

“Ousmane is a powerful, commanding defender, and arrives here with a winning mentality. He shares the same ambition for success we have, and we are excited to see the impact he can have in a Forest shirt.”

Nottingham Forest

After signing for Nottingham Forest on a four-year deal from Sporting, Ivory Coast international Ousmane Diomande says: "I am very happy to be here. It is a historic club, and it motivates me.

"I believe we can achieve very good things this season and I am looking forward to meeting the players and head coach.

"I will give my best and all I can to help the team. I cannot wait to meet the supporters at City Ground and together we can have a good season."

Glasner is a huge admirer of Diomande and tried to sign the central defender for Crystal Palace.

Diomande has made more than 150 senior first-team appearances, including 15 appearances for his national team.

Nottingham Forest have announced the signing of Ivory Coast international Ousmane Diomande.

Bradley Barcola has been listed in Paris St-Germain's squad for their Super Cup showdown with Aston Villa tomorrow.

The French winger is Liverpool's main target for this transfer window.

The Reds are prepared to pay a fee in excess of £100m for Barcola.

But for now, he's still primed for action with the European champions.

Chelsea are exploring potential loan moves for Mykhailo Mudryk as he looks to rebuild his fitness after 20 months out of football.

The Ukraine international, 25, has not played a competitive match since November 2024 after being suspended for returning an adverse finding for the banned substance meldonium.

However, the winger has since returned with substitute appearances in pre-season friendlies against Juventus, AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta'zim during Chelsea's tour of Asia after a settlement was reached to end his ban.

In meetings at the end of the tour, Mudryk agreed to leave on loan before the transfer deadline on 1 September.

A move to Strasbourg, which shares the same BlueCo ownership as Chelsea, has been proposed, but Mudryk would prefer a move to another English top-flight club.

Several other clubs have also emerged as potential destinations, including a number of leading sides in Italy.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa are in talks over a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha.

The Portugal international, 31, became a target for Villa after Amadou Onana suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury to his right knee while playing for Belgium at the World Cup.

Sources close to Palhinha say he has yet to make a decision but is open to a move to Villa Park, which is regarded as among his best options.

Bayern are willing to let him leave two years after signing him for £47.4m from Fulham.

Palhinha was on loan at Tottenham last season but the north London club opted against triggering their £26m option to buy.

"Joao Palhinha is a very good player who would fit our plans," Villa director of football Damian Vidagany told German outlet Bild on Friday.

"We are in talks, but there is currently no agreement. If something were to happen, it would always be based on the great respect we have for Bayern."

Enzo Fernandez is due back in Chelsea training today after flying in from his holiday in Ibiza yesterday.

There are again rumours that Manchester City could make a move for him.

Chelsea's stance has remained consistent. Their asking price remains £120m should any club want to sign him, acknowledging that the Argentina international is open to a move.

However, Chelsea will not budge on that valuation and both Xabi Alonso and the club as a whole would be happy to reintegrate him into the squad this season.

Manchester City

Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez is reportedly a target for Manchester City as the Etihad outfit seek midfield solutions ahead of the new season.

It's unclear whether Rodri will stay amid interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona - while Tijani Reijnders could also depart.

City want 18-year-old Moroccan star Ayyoub Bouaddi but are yet to reach an agreement with Lille.

Fernandez has emerged as a target, according to The Athletic.

The Argentine has a strong working relationship with former Chelsea boss Maresca but, while there is a focus on departures at Chelsea following the £117m purchase of Morgan Rogers, the Blues reportedly believe that Fernandez will remain in West London.

West Ham United

West Ham have completed the signing of winger Manor Solomon from Tottenham on a three-year contract.

The Championship club did not disclose the fee, but the Hammers are understood to have paid about £5m to make the Israel international their third permanent signing of the summer.

Solomon, 27, made 19 appearances for Italian side Fiorentina on loan last season.

He also spent time on loan at Leeds United and Spanish club Villarreal after joining Spurs in 2023.

"I know West Ham have a rich history both in the Premier League and in Europe," said Solomon, who will wear the number 10 shirt for the side gearing up for their first season outside the top flight since 2011-12.
