The early responses we've had seem to be in favour of not starting Declan Rice unless he is 100% fit.

I suppose there is no room for passengers in a World Cup semi-final against Argentina, is there?

The obvious replacement would be to bring Morgan Rogers into the starting XI and drop Jude Bellingham deeper.

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who is yet to play a minute at this summer's tournament, could also deputise for Rice.

Thomas Tuchel also has the wildcard option of selecting Reece James, who played in midfield several times for Chelsea last season.

It begs the question then, after clearly being unhappy with his side's performance against Norway on Saturday, does the England manager stick or twist for tomorrow night's semi-final against Argentina?

The German has made at least a handful of tweaks before each match so far - mostly at right-back and in the wide attacking positions.

But with the Three Lions now just one game away from a first World Cup final in 60 years, is this really the time to start tinkering with his side?

We already know he has a decision to make in midfield after Declan Rice was recently struck down by illness.

The other selection headaches, you'd imagine, centre around John Stones at centre-back and Ezri Konsa on the right.

England will make a late decision on whether Declan Rice is fit to start the World Cup semi-final against Argentina.

But there remains optimism the Arsenal midfielder can shake off the effects of an illness to play on Wednesday.

Rice, who suffered with a sickness bug in the lead-up to Saturday's quarter-final victory over Norway in Miami, was substituted at half-time.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel admitted afterwards that Rice had spent three days in bed before the match, which England won 2-1 after extra time.

It is understood Rice still has not recovered fully from the illness - picked up in Mexico, where England beat the co-hosts 3-2 in the last 16 - but his condition has improved markedly over the past 48 hours.

As things stand, there is growing hope he will be well enough to start in Atlanta.

Rice is almost certain to rule himself fit for the semi-final given the enormity of the occasion.

Hold your breath, England fans. Now for a bit of worrying news ahead of tomorrow night's match...

Holders Argentina will wear their navy blue away kit to face England in the semi-finals of the World Cup in Atlanta on Wednesday.

England will be in their all-white home kit for the game at the Atlanta Stadium (20:00 BST), which will be shown live on the BBC.

They have only worn the darker kit once during the tournament, in their 3-1 win against Jordan in the group stage.

While the move could be because of kit regulations, it has also been suggested by media in Argentina that it is linked to superstition - with the kit associated with iconic World Cup wins over England in 1986 and 1998.

They defeated the Three Lions 2-1 in the 1986 quarter-finals, in which Diego Maradona scored the 'Hand of God' goal, and also secured a last-16 penalty shootout victory over their old rivals at the 1998 tournament in France.

Standing between England and a second World Cup final appearance is Lionel Messi's Argentina, and left-back Nico O'Reilly is relishing the "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to face the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner.

It will be the first time Messi has faced England, and at 39, it could be the last. Manchester City defender O'Reilly has never faced him at club level either.

"I can't wait," O'Reilly, who will probably have to defend against Messi one-on-one if he starts at left-back, told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He's coming towards the end of his career. For me personally, he's the best player to ever touch a football pitch. And yeah, I can't wait for the challenge."

Messi began the tournament with a hat-trick in a 3-0 win against Algeria as he became the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history, equalling Miroslav Klose's record of 16, which had stood since 2014.

The Argentina captain has since scored five more to take that record - his total of eight goals putting him joint-first with France's Kylian Mbappe in the Golden Boot race, and taking his career World Cup tally to 21.

While Messi is Argentina's main threat, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford warned against ignoring the other talents in Lionel Scaloni's side.

"He has scored so many goals and contributed to so many over his career. It's great to finally come up against him after so long, and watching him as a kid," Pickford told media at England's training base in Kansas on Monday.

"We all know how good Messi is but we also know how good Argentina are. We can't solely rely on [stopping] Messi. We've got to focus on their other strengths and the weaknesses we can take advantage of."

The winner of the semi-final will face either France or Spain - who play each other on Tuesday (20:00 BST) - in the World Cup final at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, 19 July (20:00 BST).

We are six games into England's World Cup campaign and already it feels as though we have seen the good, the bad and the ugly of Thomas Tuchel's side.

The Three Lions started their campaign in breathtaking fashion, beating Croatia 4-2 after a strong second-half performance in Dallas.

But stodgy displays in a 0-0 draw with Ghana and a 2-0 win over Panama seemed to produce more questions than answers.

England - or, more specifically, Harry Kane - left it late to find a way past DR Congo in the round of 32, with the Bayern Munich forward scoring a late brace.

In the round of 16, England produced arguably their best performance in a generation, beating a ferocious Mexico side 3-2 with 10 men at the Azteca Stadium.

Then, in their last outing on Saturday night, Tuchel's side required extra time to overcome Norway 2-1 in Miami.
