Manchester United thrashed lowly Sheffield United in the Subway Players Cup as head coach Eva Olid claimed her first win since taking charge in August.

Captain Maya le Tissier's first-half goal from the penalty spot opened the floodgates for the hosts, with Wales forward Mared Griffiths grabbing a hat-trick.

Olid's side came into the contest having picked up their first point of the season in the Women's Super League on Saturday at Arsenal, after losing their opener to London City Lionesses and being thrashed 5-0 by Chelsea.

Germany forward Lea Schuller scored a double for the Red Devils in Wednesday's rout, while summer signing Rebeca Bernal also got on the scoresheet twice.

England midfielder Ella Toone and Jess Simpson also found the back of the net for United, while Amy Andrews hit a consolation for the Blades, who are bottom of WSL 2.

"It's so important, our first win together," said United boss Olid after the game.

"Having the possession and creating chances, it was a good match to keep building what we want to build in attack, and keep working on the identity we want to create in attack."

Olid's team travel to face Durham on 30 September (19:00 BST) for their next match in the league phase of the competition.

Prior to that, they will host West Ham in the WSL on Sunday at 13:00 BST.
