  2. 'A complete performance'published at 22:57 BST

FT: Man City 5-1 AEK Athens

    Manchester City

Man City boss Enzo Maresca, speaking to TNT Sports: "I think it was a complete performance. It was not easy, especially after the PSG game.

"So we had two games, Ipswich and today that we needed to win and, yes, we did our job. I think again, we concede the goal in transition, but probably could have made something better in that situation.

"Again, we scored five. We could have probably scored more, but happy also because some of the players were not playing many minutes. They were ready and this is important.

"To be honest, it is the best feeling for any manager when you make many changes, but at the end the performance is good, so happy for especially them.

On Phil Foden: "It is good news for me because you know he is doing well and this is what we want for many reasons. First of all, because he is a top player and we know that. Happy for him, but also happy for the team that we have one more weapon that we can use."

On Rayan Cherki: "I think Rayan since we started is doing well, in terms of also numbers, goals and assists. I am very, very happy with his performance since day one."

On youngsters: "For the academy I think we are three players from the academy that made their debut tonight, so it is nice news for the academy and for the club. We are happy with that."

On Josko Gvardiol: "No, he is OK. He had a small problem during the warm-up in his back, but he could play and he was OK."

  3. Wirtz 'works tirelessly for his team'published at 22:55 BST

    FT: Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal

    Daniel Sturridge
Former Liverpool striker on Amazon Prime

On the stats sheet yes, Florian Wirtz has improved at the football club - he has been the hardest working player statistically and now we are seeing that translate to goals and assists.

And goals and assists are what he’s being judged on, and when you are brought for such a high price tag and playing in that number 10 role, that’s what people want to see, but I think he works tirelessly for his team, and these are things we love to see, in the half space on the left side where he’s most effective, and he’s been really good over these last few games.

  4. 'I’ll be amazed if Rio doesn’t start'published at 22:52 BST

    FT: Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal

    Robbie Fowler
Former Liverpool striker on Amazon Prime

We have said all night about momentum, and talking about how they Liverpool will play against Brighton at the weekend, I’ll be amazed if Rio [Ngumoha] doesn’t start because of the momentum that he has got from this game.

You see the fans, you see how everyone got a lift by him and that’s what they need at the weekend, they need someone to lift them.

  5. 'Have to praise Iraola's changes'published at 22:50 BST

    FT: Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

If you play against a better team and give them that start, you will get punished and it will be a lot more difficult to come from behind. However you've got to praise the mentality, praise the changes of Andoni Iraola.

Something he did really well at Bournemouth was that he found solutions whether that was with personnel who he didn't think would play in certain positions...tonight he put Gravenberch at right-back, I thought he was outstanding in the second half. Gakpo going more narrow, Wirtz coming on, I think it changed the game.

Liverpool might have scored 4, however I think the chances lost are worrisome. Against a better opposition like PSG, Barcelona or Real Madrid, that could spell trouble. Big, big trouble.

  7. 'It's the sign of a good manager who can see things and fix them'published at 22:44 BST

    FT: Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal

    Robbie Fowler
Former Liverpool striker on Amazon Prime

Liverpool started sloppy. You can’t question the players attitude, but maybe the attitude going into this game they were it was going to be a little bit too easy.

They started off sloppy, but I will say they schooled for 35 minutes in the way Villareal played. They were moving the ball, the way the were dropping into positions, we spoke before about man to man marking where players from Liverpool were getting dragged out of position, but [Liverpool] found a way back in it, and it’s the sign of a good manager, a good coach, who can see things and fix them.

We were poor for the first half yes, but there were plenty of changes and we’ve now won 3 out of 3 and are second only to the team who are going to walk this competition. I’ll take that.

  9. 'You cannot relax against very good opposition'published at 22:38 BST

    FT: Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola, speaking to Amazon Prime: "A lot of things happened today. They were much better than us in the first half, and we were much better in the second half. When we've been under pressure, we answered well. When we relaxed, we made mistakes. You cannot relax against very good opposition. I value the win.

"We have to know that if we don't go to the limit, it will be difficult. We are facing very good teams. It's good to come back, but we've started losing too many goals this season.

On Brighton: "They are flying. Their confidence is through the roof. A similar style to Villarreal. They are second in everything after Barcelona. It has been a good game to prepare and we will use it.

On Rio Ngumoha: "I am really happy with Rio. He is trying to improve everything that we try to correct. He is playing a lot more on the right and he has adapted really well. He's going more inside. He struggled defensively in the first half. The second half was much better. He's becoming a more complete player. He's still only 18.

"In the first half, they were overloading the middle. We decided to put Ryan [Gravenberch] at right-back and be more of a threat working with Rio. I value Ryan a lot.

"We decided to try a bit more one-sided, help more on the left. From there, we finished the first half well and started the second half really well.

On almost playing for Liverpool: "I had a couple of moments. Even after Rafa. I was so happy where I was playing. A lot of players want to play for Liverpool."

  10. Ngumoha was 'ruthless' and 'cunning'published at 22:35 BST

    FT: Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal

    Rafa Benitez
Former Liverpool manager on Amazon Prime

I saw [Rio Ngumoha] before, and to be fair today he was much better [tonight]. The last game that I saw him he wasn’t passing players so easily, today he was ruthless, he was cunning, and he was passing players.

You talk about his position on the left side and the right side. I think on the right side he can pass players wide, and if you go wide you cannot cover, so he can make crosses, he can make passes. Maybe he’ll score less goals but I think he can make a difference.

  11. 'Ngumoha was outstanding'published at 22:30 BST

    FT: Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal

    Robbie Fowler
Former Liverpool striker on Amazon Prime

It wasn’t a statement performance from Liverpool but it was a statement performance from [Rio Ngumoha].

I think we said early in the game that Liverpool were out of sorts, not playing really well, they were sloppy and giving the ball away, but there was one player you could count on in that first half, that could make something happen, and he carried on in the second half. He was a big big difference.

When Florian Wirtz came on he was a big big player [too], but for the full 70 minutes that he was on, Rio Ngumoha was outstanding.

  12. 'Massive for my confidence' - Lewispublished at 22:27 BST

FT: Man City 5-1 AEK Athens

    Manchester City

Man City's Rico Lewis, speaking to TNT Sports: "Even though we had the win the other day against Ipswich, we wanted to put it right in this competition. Today we have put our stamp down, got the goals we wanted and, ultimately, three points help."

On Enzo Maresca: "I knew him from when he was here for the treble season, so that helps. Everything is clear. Everyone knows the idea. Even if we do make mistakes, we're all going in the right direction. Everything is going smooth right now."

On game time and a good performance: "It is massive. For me, I have not had much time on the pitch. When you get thrown into a game, you get all worked up on and you need to do well. Massive for my confidence."

  13. 'What he does with the ball at his feet is God given ability'published at 22:24 BST

    FT: Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal

    Daniel Sturridge
Former Liverpool striker on Amazon Prime

Rio Ngumoha was magnificent tonight. Such a threat, and he dedicated himself to his tasks. On the ball this kid has so much potential, and I say kid, but he’s a young man. He has so much quality and it’s stuff that you can’t teach to be honest.

What he does with the ball at his feet, that is God given ability, and his hard work on the training pitch, doing things day in and day out, and being ruthless, is what he said in his interview, and I like that. He wants to be decisive, and I love that about him.

  14. Ngumoha 'was amazing tonight'published at 22:21 BST

    FT: Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal

    Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, speaking to Amazon Prime: "It wasn't an easy game. Look around Rio, he was amazing tonight. He made the difference. He was really important and I'm glad for him.

"It's clear the quality he [Rio Ngumoha] has. Everyone knows. It's easy to say he's a really good player but he needs to focus on other things. He worked really hard off the ball.

"I would say 35 minutes into the first half, we made some changes. I dropped to the middle to keep more possession because we were not playing well. In the second half, we scored the goals, which is important.

"The idea was to play more on the right and open up more. We did it quite well but we were not osminating the game. After that, the manager changed and we did well.

On his goals: "I'm not tall but I love going in the box. I really like it. They know I like to attack the near post. I scored in the World Cup as well. It was a good header. The second goal, Rio, was amazing. I talk with him about cutting it back on the floor.

"It's not something I really practice. My dad is a bit smaller than me but he was quite good in the air so maybe it's something I got from him.

"Last year was a really difficult year for all of us. It was clear I was not at the level and I am the first one to say. Something wasn't right in the group and this manager changed it. The way we play is different, I don't like to compare. I'm feeling good.

On changes from last season: "Now it's more man-to-man. You have to communicate less. Last year, it was more like a zonal thing. I like both. In the national team, we do zonal and it works. It's about us taking the responsibility. It's one of the changes. Now it's easier, you think less but run more.

On talking about his contract situation: "When I say what I said, it was more about my feelings. That's their decision and it's fine. I do my best and in the end, we'll see what happens.

On Andoni Iraola: "From the first day, I started seeing something. He's a nice guy, and the coaching staff is too. We are going in the right direction but we need to work and put in everything. Hopefully, we can win some trophies."

  15. 'Lewis really stepped up'published at 22:18 BST

FT: Man City 5-1 AEK Athens

    Steve McManaman
Former Real Madrid winger on TNT Sports

When Rico Lewis got the opportunity, he really stepped up. He was very confident, making runs forward and getting assists himself. He had a good game himself, as well as Phil Foden.

  16. Foden's form 'going in the right direction'published at 22:15 BST

FT: Man City 5-1 AEK Athens

    Manchester City

Man City forward Phil Foden, speaking to TNT Sports: "I enjoyed that a lot. The lads were great again. We showed determination again. It wasn't pretty at times. I thought we stuck at the gameplan, we kept going and in the end we broke them down.

"Probably the second [goal], the way it went it - delighted to score goals. I am a forward, so I have to keep scoring and helping the team. Good for my confidence."

On returning to his best form: "Slowly, but surely. Still got a long way to go, but I am going in the right direction.

"Scoring along the way definitely helps. I want to keep working hard and keep being the best I can for the manager and the team.

"When I changed into that false nine role I enjoyed it a lot. Really enjoyed that role tonight."

On supporting young players: Trying to help them the best I can with the captains. Try help the young ones, and it shows the trust the manager has. We have a lot of injuries and he is not afraid to use the young lads."

  17. 'Beautiful' Foden has 'exquisite' finishingpublished at 22:12 BST

FT: Man City 5-1 AEK Athens

    Joleon Lescott
Former Man City defender on TNT Sports

That's the word I would use to describe him - beautiful. His finishing was exquisite.

I think he has convinced the manager that if Erling Haaland isn't available for any reason throughout the season, then he is the man to play at number nine.

Arguably the star of the show will be Rio Ngumoha. We're starting to see signs that he is starting to show the potential we knew he had. Now we're starting to see a little bit more end product.

A big night for Liverpool and much-needed as well.

  20. 'I'll just keep going and be ruthless'published at 22:06 BST

    FT: Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal

    Liverpool

Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha, speaking to Amazon Prime: "It was a top performance from the boys. We were two goals down but the mentality was always there. We knew we were going to win.

"It's up there with one of the best I've played. I enjoyed myself and the team helped me a lot.

"Whenever I get the ball and there's an opportunity to go one v one or two v one, I believe in myself. I'll just keep going and be ruthless.

On becoming Liverpool's youngest player to assist in the Champions League: "These records are amazing to break but winning is the most important.

On playing on the right: "It's helped me a lot in training with the gaffer, the coaching staff and the players.

On hearing his name chanted: "We have the best fans in the world and to hear my name chanted is a dream."
