Good comeback from United Carrick needed that but not sure if this is a start of something or just delaying the inevitable in Carrick getting the sack.

  2. 'We needed a bit of a kick'published at 22:41 GMT

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Roma

    Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, speaking to Amazon Prime: "It's unbelievable really, it's the magic of this stadium and this club, these fans, to come back from 2-0 down.

"As much as you'd don't expect it, you know it's possible at a place like this."

On what was said at half-time: "We needed a bit of a kick. We were a bit reactionary. When we lost the ball, we weren't reacting as quickly as we could have and the boss really drilled it into us that we need to be more active and take the game ourselves."

On second-half performance: "We know what we're capable of. We know we're a dangerous team and we know we can change a game whenever, it's just it all coming together at the right time. It has tonight and hopefully we carry it on for the rest of the season."

On feeling in the dressing room: "Everyone is buzzing. A big sig of relief, we've needed this win for a while and hopefully we can carry it on."

On the connection with the fans: "It's unlike anything else. We'd do anything for those fans on that pitch. All the love they give us throughout a season, it's only right we repay them - and a bit of fun jumping into the stands with them!"

  3. 'Media have no idea what's going on at Man Utd'published at 22:38 GMT

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Roma

    Kasper Schmeichel
Former Leicester goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

    On Bruno Fernandes' post-match comments:

I like that. In Bruno Fernandes' defence is that I've been in football a long time and what's reported in the media is a fraction of the truth usually. They have no idea what's going on in the dressing room. They have no idea what's going on in the training ground. The amount of times I saw something written about the clubs I was playing in that couldn't be further from the truth was absolutely staggering. As players we couldn't believe they could get away with writing things that were said.

I understand that there could be frustration if that's the case from Fernandes' side. He said what he said [after the Como match]. That wasn't behind closed doors. And the things he's saying now in terms of taking responsibility for his performances that weren't good enough, that's how the conversations should've gone when it started.

Manchester United have always had a way of communicating with the media but this isn't the Manchester United of old.

I hope for Manchester United and Michael Carrick they can draw a line under all this public stuff and they can get back to winning games like they did today.

  4. 'We don't need to save anyone's job'published at 22:36 GMT

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Roma

    Manchester United

More from Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, on the players needing to perform: "It's about performing at this club, getting results and winning games It's been a long time, we didn't get a win, it's been frustrating for them as much as us too, but we didn't take that in wrong way because it's normal. Fans want to win games. They are used to seeing this club at the top, winning trophies and it's been frustrating to see the club in this situation.

"We are all frustrated with the situation and we want to get out of this and hopefully this win today gives us the start of something good for us."

On saving Michael Carrick's job: "We don't need to save anyone's job. The club needed that win, the players needed that win. We have been working so hard to get out of this situation all together. It's been tough, there's been a lot of speculation in the media. A lot of lies around many things that have happened between me and the manager, that we have cleared the air, then after that the manager took decision to be on the bench because I'm not performing.

"Everyone thought that was a punishment for the words that I had. If it was, it was right. The manager is the one who makes the decisions. It doesn't change the belief I have of the manager and the staff and every player in this club. It doesn't change my aim to win every game that I have ahead of me."

  5. Man Utd have a 'lot more to prove'published at 22:35 GMT

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Roma

    Nicky Butt
Former Manchester United midfielder on Amazon Prime

I think it's in there and you can see that in certain parts of the game. You can see that they can be aggressive and can get high on the press, they can do nice things on the ball and score goals but they can also give goals away which you saw in the first half.

They have to get a little bit of continuity in their game now and become a better team over the 90 minutes.

If they do that then they will be okay, but there is still a long way to go and a lot more to prove. Let's not get carried away, they played well for half a game, it was nice, but there is still a lot to do.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes speaking to Amazon Prime: "It's tough to say something at the moment to be honest. It's been a tough period for us, we have not been able to play in the way we want, get the results we want. We've done some good bits, but not had the consistency to do it through a whole game to get results and it's been tough.

"But today was important to get a win. We knew after that we still had the fans with us, we felt we could change it with a goal and something and fortunately we did it today."

On his penalty miss and re-take: "First one didn't go the way I wanted, I did something wrong but I got a second chance and I cleared my head and my mind was only on to get the ball in back of the net.

"It's been tough for the fans, we understand that. Having that belief from their side helps the team a lot and today was one of those days that Old Trafford came alive."

  7. 'We defended well'published at 22:30 GMT

    FT: Barcelona 3-0 Aston Villa

    Barcelona

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick, speaking to Uefa: "It was important at home against a really good team. We defended well, really happy with what I saw in the defence. Everyone gave their best to keep the clean sheet today.

"We have the right distance between us and we are very compact. In front of our goal we defended well. It was amazing."

On Rodri, who went off with an issue: "He has some discomfort in the muscle and we have to wait until tomorrow.

  8. 'A huge learning curve'published at 22:28 GMT

    FT: Barcelona 3-0 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa captain John McGinn, speaking to TNT Sports: "Barcelona made the right decisions at the right times and scored really good goals.

"The manager spoke about being clinical at important moments in the game. When you come here 50-50s sometimes don't go your way. They also leave players up the pitch so if you lose the ball they can be away.

"I think we are competitive against teams at this level, we have shown that whether it is Bayern Munich or PSG. Tonight was a huge learning curve for us and I am sure it will stand us in good stead for the future."

  9. 'Everyone has to be on the same page now'published at 22:26 GMT

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Roma

    Kasper Schmeichel
Former Leicester goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Things look a little bit better. Don't get me wrong, the second half is papering over the cracks from the first half, so now it's a case of using this as a benchmark and now having even more of those conversations. Making sure that this is a building block. That this isn't just out of the ordinary. It was nine without a win and now they get that chip off their shoulder to go and say, 'can this be the start of a run?'

You have to put your differences aside because you aren't able to change your players now, so you need everyone on side. Everyone has to be on the same page right now.

  10. Postpublished at 22:24 GMT

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Roma

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been speaking to the media after the comeback win. It is the first time he has addressed the media since his comments against Michael Carrick and his staff and subsequently being dropped from the team.

Full quotes coming your way shortly.

  11. 'I do believe when you are performing badly, you go back to basics'published at 22:22 GMT

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Roma

    Nicky Butt
Former Manchester United midfielder on Amazon Prime

It's strange isn't it, the first half was shocking, but the second half was a total different game.

I do believe when you are performing badly, which we all have done, but you go back to basics, you work hard, you go man to man all over the pitch, and you out run and you out fight the opposition. They did that second half, they started playing well, getting the chances and the [result] they looked like they deserved in the end.

  12. 'The first half had none of what we saw in the second half'published at 22:21 GMT

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Roma

    Wayne Rooney
Former England striker on Amazon Prime

Bruno Fernandes has shown a bit of passion in defending himself on what he thought was right, but more importantly we have seen that passion and fight on the pitch because the first half was terrible. The first half had none of what we saw in the second half.

No passion, no tackling, no getting to the ball, no aggression, and the complete opposite of the second half.

And when that happens in the second half, you see the crowd get behind the team and you felt like they were going to win the game.

  13. 'That's how we repay Carrick'published at 22:17 GMT

Manchester United midfielder Youri Tielemans, speaking to Amazon Prime about the fans: "The whole game, even the last few months, they've been brilliant, they've been behind us. They have been frustrated with the results like us. The turnaround was brilliant, big mentality.

On what has changed: "We just kept working, we kept believing. We were on the front foot in the second half, we tried to push them into their goal and we succeeded."

On Michael Carrick: "There has been a lot of pressure on him and that's how we repay him, with a comeback like this, big character, big fight."

On whether this result has saved Carrick's job: "That's a different question. The only thing we can do is stick behind him, fight for him and fight for the club.

"At the end of the day we are on the pitch and we need to show what we are capable of and tonight, especially in the second half, we showed what we can do and we turned up the gears.

"Let's hope this is a good turnaround for us and let's hope we can build on this."

  14. 'The team are fighting for the manager'published at 22:14 GMT

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Roma

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think the narrative for Michael Carrick is absolutely perfect because what's happened is Manchester United have gone in, a vulnerable team, a team lacking in confidence, they've gone 2-0 down - now what's the reaction?

Now we've just seen the reaction, so we know it's in there. The team are fighting for the manager and they're fighting to turn results around. You've got to fight and show something. When you show fight and start to run for each other, you get more confident in each other and you start to believe that you can do something.

The Old Trafford fans and that crowd will have turned it up a notch in the second half as soon as that first goal went in and help the team believe that they could get something out of it.

It's a perfect night for Michael Carrick.

Just what did Michael Carrick say at half time?

Thirty second-half minutes that may just have saved his job. That must have been one heck of a team-talk.

We were questioning just what he would say but whatever it was, it clearly did the trick.

Great credit to Michael Carrick because they were down and out at half-time. They were everywhere in that first-half, and he had to change and tweak things.

I said what can he do, I didn't know where he would start, and he must have started in the dressing room, and pointing at a few people telling them to be brave and courageous and move the ball quicker, and run in behind and they did all those things in the second half and got their reward by getting their win.

  17. 'Man Utd needed that spark'published at 22:05 GMT

    FT: Man Utd 3-2 Roma

    Kasper Schmeichel
Former Leicester goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

This is what we were talking about. There needed to be a spark. I think they got a little bit of luck. I'm not sure the penalty was a penalty and then they get a retake, but you need that sometimes. That was the spark to set it all off.

The only bright spark there has been for Manchester United during these times has been Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. I think this is hopefully the catalyst to show Man Utd that when you play with that energy and spark and desire and passion, you close down, you're running, this is what happens.

We heard the crowd, when their tails are up there's not many louder places to play in than that.

Michael Carrick's face doesn't give too much away but he pounds his chest, pumps his fists and that tells you all you need to know about how he feels about this club and its supporters.

You got the sense that once they got the first goal, it got everyone going again, and then the belief and confidence came back.
