Plymouth boss Cleverley targets League One summit

Plymouth Argyle boss Tom Cleverley says it would show how far his side have come if they can go top of League One.

The Pilgrims know victory at home to Burton Albion on Saturday (15:00 BST) would see them rise from third place to the summit of the division as top two Bradford City and Sheffield Wednesday are not in action due to international call-ups.

It marks a remarkable rise for Cleverley's side, who were bottom of League One less than a year ago, but have won 18 of their 29 games since the turn of the year.

"We're not getting carried away with ourselves, it's only September," he said.

"But we're pleased with the form that we're in, the performance levels and the consistency that we're showing.

"A lot of things that we've worked on for many weeks now are coming out in the performances.

"We're doing all the right things, we're doing the basics very well and that's given us a good level, a good baseline of performance and then the quality of the players and that bit of X-factor has been really shining through in the last few games.

"You've seen that with the amount of the goals scored and the quality of some of them."

Cleverley had to cope with a massive turnover of players when he first joined the club last summer following Argyle's relegation from the Championship.

But having had a smaller change in his side over this summer has allowed Argyle to find consistency.

Plymouth finished last season winning eight and losing just one of their final 12 games as they came within a few moments of sneaking into the play-off places.

Only Championship sides Lincoln (70) and Southampton (62) have taken more points than Argyle's 60 across 2026.

"That's a long period of time and that gives us confidence that we can sustain it over a long period of time," Cleverley added.

"The players know exactly what they have to do and within that framework they have freedom to show their qualities, which they're doing week-in, week-out at the minute."
