No 'hangover' as Truro begin season with victory

Truro City assistant manager Stewart Yetton says there was no "hangover from last season" after his side opened the new campaign with a win.

The Tinners beat Maidenhead United 2-0 in National League South to record their first home win since Boxing Day, having finished bottom in the top flight of non-league football last season.

Tyler Harvey headed Truro into a 25th-minute lead from close range after a goalkeeping mistake following a corner and Will Dean stabbed home from another poorly dealt with dead-ball delivery five minutes later.

"There's no monkeys on our back - last time we were in this league, we won it," Yetton told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"So there's no hangover from last season, not for us anyway. Whether people think that or not, it's just white noise to us."

Despite the scrappy nature of Truro's goals, Yetton says scoring more from set-pieces is something he and manager John Askey have been focusing on.

"We appreciate the set-pieces here can be a massive advantage and it's something that we've worked on a bit more this pre-season, because last season we probably came up short a few times and we probably should have scored a few more goals," he said.

"We were unlucky not to score a couple more in open play as well, so hopefully that will come as the season progresses."

Yetton added: "We said to the boys beforehand that they've worked very hard in pre-season and what we didn't want to do is, after such a good pre-season results and performance-wise, is to go out there on the first day and not build upon that.

"They've kept their end of the bargain, so everyone's really pleased.

"The first game is always a big one to get on the board, being at home was a little bit sweeter for us as well."
