Parents back Josh Tarling riding in Vuelta a Espana

Josh Tarling, the elder brother of Finlay who died in the Volta a Portugal last Friday, will ride at the Vuelta a Espana which begins on Saturday.

Finlay, 19, died in a high-speed collision with a van, which had strayed on to the road during the eighth stage of the Portugal race.

Josh, 22, a time trial specialist, will compete for his team Netcompany Ineos with fellow Welshman and former Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas saying the decision was the rider's.

Finlay and Josh's parents Dawn and Michael also said the family backed Josh's decision.

"He has chosen to do so in honour of his brother Fin, with the full support of his family, surrounded by a team who have been incredibly supportive of whatever decision he made," they posted on social media.

Dawn Tarling added: "I could not have wished for two boys who were closer growing up and into adulthood we have watched with pride as Joshua has been the most loving and supportive big brother to Fin. Following this devastating news he has been an incredible strength for us all.

"Finlay was so incredibly proud of his big brother, and would be watching nose to the TV and shouting as he competed.

"So it is right that Josh honours that love and pride by doing what Fin always loved watching him do. #forFin."

Director of racing Thomas said it "goes without saying that, as a team, we all fully support Josh in his decision to take part in the race".

Since Finlay's death there have been calls for greater safety in the sport, including from the winner of stage one of the Tour of Britain Women, Dutch cyclist Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx - Protime).

That came before Australian rider Maeve Plouffe said she narrowly avoided being hit by a car during the first stage of the Tour Of Britain Women.

The Vuelta a Espana begins on 22 August in Moncaco and ends on 13 September.
