Summary

Have your say on England men this summer

  1. Eng 195-2published at 36 overs

That's a nice way to get off the mark.

A bit of a Joe Root classic, playing late to guide Nathan Smith's first ball through third for four.

Smith follows that with five dot balls, the last of which beats Root's bat and is taken smartly by Tom Blundell, standing up to the stumps.

  2. Eng 191-2published at 35 overs

Jacob Bethell takes all of this over too, as Ben Sears sends down a maiden.

Over to Joe Root to face Nathan Smith.

It's an interesting game because England feel like they're on top but they're still 248 behind.

  4. drinks break

    Eng 191-2published at 34 overs

Jacob Bethell faces all of Nathan Smith's over, taking two off the first ball and and a single from the last to retain the strike.

    The players are taking drinks.

Very little movement from any of the New Zealand bowlers.

A better over for Ben Sears. England are very much in charge though and will be looking to push ahead.

  6. Eng 188-2published at 33 overs

    Thank you kindly, Mr A.

One single off Ben Sears' fifth over, with Joe Root now yet to score off seven deliveries.

I'm off for a pint of the black stuff to celebrate Ireland's incredible win over India. Will have to be a pint of coffee as I'm on work duty, naturally.

Here's Mike Peter to take you through until the close of play.

  8. How's stat?!published at 17:32 BST

In nine Tests at Trent Bridge before this match, Joe Root has scored 956 runs at an average of 68.28, with five centuries.

  9. Eng 187-2published at 32 overs

Ben Duckett is given a generous ovation by the Trent Bridge crowd as he walks off, and he salutes them in response.

"Rooooootttt" is the boisterous greeting reserved for England's all-time leading runscorer.

Joe Root content to block the first four balls of his innings from Nathan Smith.

New Zealand will be relieved about that. But it's always difficult when Joe Root comes in. I don't think it's going to be much of a break for New Zealand.

    WICKETpublished at 31.2 overs

    Duckett b Smith 113 (Eng 187-2)

Ben Duckett clips the first ball of Nathan Smith's over off his legs for four, but is on his way back to the pavilion next ball.

The England opener has chewing gum feet - as Sir Geoff Boycott says - and ends up chopping on a wider one from the Kiwi seamer.

Duckett, perhaps, running out of energy a little as that looked a bit of a tired shot.

  12. Eng 183-1published at 31 overs

Ben Sears manages to bring a fraction of control with a tight-ish over.

Has anyone mentioned John Betjeman's "Cricket Master (an incident)"? Beautifully describes the remorse, chaos and tragedy that follows a little misunderstanding about his cricketing prowess.

    Bob, Welwyn Garden City

Harry Flashman, the legendary bounder, cad and coward in "Flashman's Lady" - connived his way to three wickets against the Victorian era's finest batsmen, invented the term "hat-trick". Magnificent reading.

We've received confirmation from the New Zealand camp that seamer Blair Tickner has been ruled out of the remainder of the Test with concussion, having been struck on the head during the first innings.

He will be replaced by concussion sub Zak Foulkes, the 24-year-old right-arm pacer. He has played five Tests for New Zealand, most recently against Ireland last month.

  16. Eng 180-1published at 30 overs

    Trail by 258 runs

England are ticking along nicely here.

  17. Bethell in his groundpublished at 29.2 overs

Jacob Bethell had lifted his foot in the air after the bails had been taken off by Tom Blundell, so he's safe.

  18. Umpire reviewpublished at 29.2 overs

Nathan Smith is bowling with Tom Blundell stood up to the stumps.

We have a review after Jacob Bethell lifts his foot in the air while working away and Blundell whips the bails off.

Congrats to Ben Duckett. He doesn't get the credit he deserves for turning down a healthy IPL cheque to be ready for England. Yes, that is how it should be, but it often isn't.

    Liz, London

Well played Ben Duckett, we want MORE!

    Rachel, Lincoln

If Joe Root's in the right frame of mind he could go past Sachin Tendulkar's record by Sunday afternoon on this pitch.

Ben Duckett's previous Test hundred came against India on 20 June 2025, where he scored 149. Today's century ends a year-long wait and a 21-innings gap between the hundreds.
