Ben Aitchison returned his best first-class figures since July 2022 to keep Derbyshire firmly in control of their County Championship Division Two match against Northamptonshire at the Central Co-op County Ground.

The seamer, who missed all of the 2024 season with a back injury, took 4-55 as the visitors were bowled out for 228 with Rory Haydon taking three wickets and England spinner Shoaib Bashir two.

Calvin Harrison scored a defiant 107 and shared a seventh-wicket stand of 105 from 230 balls with Lewis McManus, but his side were forced to follow-on and closed at Derby on 66-2, still 310 runs behind, after Bashir bowled Ricardo Vasconcelos just before the end of day three.

Zak Chappell had bowled impressively on day two with no reward but that changed in the 10th over of the morning when he broke an obdurate fifth-wicket stand.

James Sales, who was dropped in the gully off Chappell the previous evening, had stayed with Harrison for 35 overs but was finally undone by a ball that came back and kept slightly low.

Derbyshire struck again in the next over when George Bartlett clipped Bashir to mid-wicket to leave Northants on the ropes at 116-66.

Harrison did drive Bashire over wide long on for six but that was a rare moment of aggression as McManus joined him to form another stubborn partnership.

The pair frustrated Derbyshire for 22 overs to go to lunch on 173-6 and the resistance continued into the afternoon before the second new ball did the trick for the hosts.

Harrison cover drove Haydon for consecutive fours on his way to a defiant century, but the young fast bowler had the last word when he shaped one in to knock out middle stump.

Aitchison quickly accounted for Ben Sanderson and George Scrimshaw, but Harry Conway somehow survived for nearly eight overs before McManus was well caught by Matt Montgomery at short leg.

The follow-on was enforced with Northants 376 behind but Vasconcelos and Luke Proctor gave them hope by seeing off the threat of the new ball.

Vasconcelos was dropped at first slip off Martin Andersson on 23 but in his next over, the all-rounder had Proctor lbw pushing half forward.

Bashir dropped a difficult low chance at backward square leg to give Vasconcelos another life on 28 but made amends when he bowled the opener, who chopped on trying to cut three overs before the close.
