Gymnasts Evans and Roper miss out on medals

Olympic gymnast Ruby Evans failed to claim a Commonwealth Games medal in the women's all-round individual competition in Glasgow.

Evans had qualified second and was considered a medal hope for Wales.

The 19-year-old was in second place at the halfway stage of the competition but suffered a poor balance beam discipline on the third rotation.

A slip from the beam left her with too much to do for a podium finish despite a thrilling performance on the floor.

Evans finished sixth overall and was emotional at the conclusion of the competition as she tried to cope with her disappointment.

Her Welsh team-mate Emily Roper finished one place behind her in seventh with a score of 50.350 from her four rotations.

Roper entered the final rotation just 0.5 points off a podium spot, but her medal hopes were dashed after falling to her side upon landing a somersault in her floor routine.

The gold medal was won by Canada's Elsabeth Black.

Roper will go again in the vault final alongside her twin sister Abigail on Monday afternoon before also competing in the uneven bars.

Evans, meanwhile, will contest the uneven beam and then the floor finals on Tuesday.

The highest ever finish for a Welsh female gymnast in the all-around competition remains fifth place by Elizabeth Beddoe in Glasgow in 2014.

The 16 finalists competed over the four disciplines of vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor.
