The first airsow we saw at R.A.F Finningley was in the early Eighties and we where lucky enough to see the last Vulcan scramble they demonstrated, even now, well over 25 years later I can still remember the spectacular sights and sounds as the four huge bombers climbed into the air with only a miniscule time elapse seperating them. It was great to see the last flying Vulcan at R.A.F Waddington a couple of weeks back, displaying for the first time in 15 years.

I too like Ian Gladwin was in the ATC but I never got chance to go as a cadet however my grandmother was lucky enough to win tickets to the event in our local paper along with enclosure passes. From the age of 3 right until the closure of the base I never missed a show and I still have all the programmes to prove it at home.

I have visited RAF Finningly on a number of occasions as it was our Parent Station when i was in the Air Training Corps. The first time we visited was for the 1994 air show where we were lucky enough to sell the programmes, and we even got to pull a fire engine the complete length of the runway!!! But seriously, the facilities there were top notch, and that includes the mess hall too! Was a big shame when the MOD decided to call time on such a lovely station, in such a lovely area.

my grandad and my late father both worked on the camp lots of years ago , my grandfather looked after the horses which were used to tow aircraft on the airbase during the 1st world war , and my dad he ran the base pig farm which supplied a lot of the meat for all on the base , i will be sorting some old photos to send and show you , of which will take some finding but we do have them , and also mum worked a scivilian on the base in the 70,s . so stand by for some old , very old archive pictures

I was delighted to see & read about Finningly, as my mom used to drive the buses to there during and just after the war, and I went to so many shows there with my dad, he was in the RAF and wouldn't miss one when I was little, I am hoping eventually i canfly right into there soon from Florida. so much easier to get home, Thank you for the nice thoughts and memories Jenifer Carole Walton

FAO Eric Hebden Hi Eric, Thanks for your posting. Perhaps you could try contacting the airport in the first instance? My note in relation to Finningley is that my father (Harold Hebden) died at the base during its construction in January 1948. I was only 9 months old at the time. The only information I have is that he fell from the roof level inside one of the hangers while painting. I would love to be able to find out more about the accident plus which hanger it happened in etc but have never been able to find out any information.

I have fond memories of Finningley. My wifes grandparents lived in Auckley and often on Sunday mornings you could hear the jet engines being tested. People just lived with the noise and boy was it noisy. I also have memories of the big American Galaxy plane at Finningley and Concorde. A particularly enjoyable experience of standing on the flight deck of Air France's Concorde and wpndering how I at 6' 4" would be comfortable if I ever managed to raise the fair to travel by this big beautiful bird.
