Formed during the Biafran war, Chyke Madu’s band The Funkees combined African rhythms with hard rock to produce a new style of music which became known as Afro Rock. In the 1970s the band lived for several years in London, and toured the UK and Europe as they tried to break through commercially. By the time Chyke’s daughter Didi was born he had returned to Nigeria and taken up farming, but still practised music, leading an orchestra and church choir. Didi knew little about her father’s rock star past, but when she went to work in the music industry herself, she tracked down his music and found that while it might not have had huge commercial success, The Funkees' music has a big influence on contemporary musicians, with hip-hop stars like Kendrick Lamar keen to sample Chyke's drum beats in particular. These days Didi organises the licensing of The Funkees' music.
