At the heart of the story is their mother - Savinder Kaur - born in Kenya to Sikh Indian parents, married off very young in Punjab in India, and who had to leave behind her son after that marriage failed. She never spoke about him to her children born during her second marriage. It was a secret that consumed her until her death at 88 here in Britain. It was only after her death that her son, Avtar Singh, now 66 years old, managed to track down one of his half sisters, Nicci Dhamu, when a blog, a tribute she had written about her late mother and published in her business's website, came up in a ChatGPT prompt. Julian Worricker spoke to Avtar, who lives in Canada, and Nicci, who lives in London. Avtar began by speaking about his search for the mother he never knew.
