The top-secret D-Day tanks tested in Lincolnshire

Secret Lincolnshire

Available for over a year

The Normandy landings of 6 June 1944, better known as D-Day, were the largest seaborne invasion in history. One of the keys to the Allies' success was the amphibious Duplex Drive tank, which was tested in secret on the river Trent at Burton upon Stather in North Lincolnshire. The Trent was chosen because of its similarity to European rivers which would need to be crossed later in the invasion, and despite the wartime secrecy the trials are still remembered in the village more than 80 years on. Produced and narrated by Sally Fairfax. Image: Burton upon Stather Heritage Group.
