Why are so many teachers leaving the profession?

The North East has seen the biggest percentage fall in trainee teachers in England. Darlington has seen a 12% reduction and in places like Redcar and Hartlepool, numbers have fallen by up to 7%. Schools across our area now say it's getting harder and harder to find teachers. Amy Oakden spoke to former teacher, Lucy Fenny. The National Education Union told the BBC increased workload ranked as the main reason one in three teachers considered quitting. The Government says it's cutting it's target for new teachers and argues falling pupil numbers have dramatically reduced the volume of new trainees actually required by the state system It also says new incentives and curriculum changes are working to bring new people into education and retain current staff.
