In 1950 Silverstone hosted the first World Championship Grand Prix. The former airfield has since gone on to become one of the most iconic motor racing circuits in the world. But it was another World War Two base 50 miles to the east where British motor racing actually roared back into life after its enforced six-year hibernation.
