Episode details

Available for over a year
In the 12th and 13th centuries, Leicester saw a significant development boom. Several major new buildings appeared inside and outside the town walls, whilst many existing buildings including the castle and the churches were enlarged or rebuilt. The medieval High Street (now called Highcross Street) was at this time the main trading street of the town. The remains of what is thought to be a wealthy merchant’s house were found at the top of the modern Highcross Street under what is now the BBC Radio Leicester building. It had a Norman Undercroft of stone which was probably used for the storage of valuable goods. BBC Leicester’s Ben Jackson went to see it for himself with historian Peter Liddle. Produced by Pete Wardman. If you want to know as soon as a new episode is available, make sure you subscribe to Secret Leicestershire on BBC Sounds and have push notifications turned on.
