Kathryn Tickell presents the best in new global folk and roots-based music; and this week, she invites British-Kenyan musician John Low to select three tracks from the vibrant acoustic guitar scene of 1950s and 60s Nairobi. As a young man, Low travelled across Kenya, Tanzania, the Congo and Zambia in search of his guitar heroes, learning fingerstyle techniques and recording informal sessions with musicians including Jean-Bosco Mwenda, Losta Abelo and Emmanuel Mulemena. Nearly five decades later, these recordings have finally been brought together in a recent compilation from Mississippi Records. Elsewhere in the show, raucous Transylvanian folk from Műhely Banda and a summer carol from Welsh musician Huw Marc Bennett.
