DJ, broadcaster, writer and dreamer Zakia Sewell provides the soundtrack to your dreams - playing music to ease the mind, soothe the soul, and open portals to new dimensions… Zakia marks the 100th birthday of one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century; trumpeter, bandleader, composer and visionary Miles Davis. Born on the 26th of May 1926, Miles Davis spent 40 years at the forefront of musical innovation, recording at least 60 albums in his lifetime, collaborating with almost every jazz great you can think of, and inspiring generations of musicians to come. Zakia digs out some of her own favourite records of his, from the smoky soundtrack of Ascenseur Pour L'échafaud to the cosmic psychedelic leanings of Guinnevere. We also hear tracks from some of the artists that he inspired, including Jaimie Branch and Thundercat, alongside some new releases from Yazz Ahmed, Seu Jorge and Aaron Shaw. Plus we hear from another trumpeter inspired by Miles - Kokoroko’s bandleader Sheila Maurice-Grey. She shares how her own journey with the trumpet started with Kind of Blue, and picks the piece of his that soundtracks her dreams. We want to hear your dreams!
