The former top civil servant at the Foreign Office, Sir Olly Robbins, has given evidence to MPs about the appointment of Lord Mandelson as the UK ambassador to the US. Yesterday, the Prime Minister insisted officials had taken a "deliberate decision" not to disclose to him that the former Labour peer hadn't passed some security vetting checks. Robbins has told the Foreign Affairs Select Committee there was an "atmosphere of pressure" and a "very strong expectation" from No 10 that Mandelson should be "in post and in America as quickly as humanly possible".
