From the offset, the large crowd witnessed fantastic racing, as the Rebels' skipper, Magnus Zetterstrom, missed the gate completely in heat one. But not only did he find his way past his team mate, with a tenacious display of riding, he also went around the Rye House pair of Edward Kennett and Stuart Robson. The Rebels missed their new Aussie recruit Trevor Harding in heat two, as the Rockets' strong reserve pairing recorded a maximum 5-1 heat advantage. Delighted home fans The next heat, however, saw Somerset hit straight back with a 5-1 of their own from the ever reliable Paul Fry and Ritchie Hawkins partnership. A two-point lead fluctuated between the teams throughout the evening. Both Zetterstrom and Glenn Cunningham delighted the home fans with last-bend passes in heat six and seven, as the scores were locked at 21-21 each. It was heat eight that was the turning point of the meeting. A determined first bend by Jamie Smith saw him gain a well-earned win, as he held off the challenge of Kennett. Smith again played his part in heat 10, while Zetterstrom finished ahead of Rockets' captain, Brent Werner, to secure a 4-2, and earn a two-point lead for the Rebels. A tremendous night of entertainment The following two heats were speedway at its very best. In heat 11, Stuart Robson took an early lead from Cunningham, who, on the last bend, found a late surge to finish. He appeared, to the Rebels fans, to be ahead of the Rocket, but the referee disagreed, and handed the win to the Rye House favourite. A reserve change in heat 12 by the Rockets set the heat up to be a classic, as all four riders passed and repassed each other. Ritchie Hawkins, in the end, forced himself to the front. A battling performance by Paul Fry in heat 14, as he fought his way past Daniel King and Tommy Allen, meant that a thrilling last-heat decider would be the culmination of a tremendous night of entertainment. Rye House, however, made their chances of an away win more difficult by the two-minute exclusion of their number one Stuart Robson. He was replaced by the Rockets' reserve Allen, who, whilst chasing the leaders, took a nasty tumble on the third lap. Surprisingly, the referee called for a rerun but the two Premier League points were already sealed, as Cunningham and Zetterstrom raced to a 5-1 to the jubilation of the large crowd. |
