Diary of a Stroke Patient: Part Eight, 7 June 2005

Mike Elliott
Mike Elliott, one of bbc.co.uk/somerset's reviewers, suffered a stroke on Thursday 24 March, 2005. This is the eighth part of Mike's Diary of a Stroke Patient which tells of his ordeal.

If there is any semblance of truth in what my physio Fiona says (she accused me of leaving my best work until Friday afternoon), then the responsibility rests on her own shoulders.

Each week the intensity and difficulty of my physiotherapy sessions increases daily.

Last Friday afternoon she pulled a major rabbit out of the hat by deciding that I could tackle a full set of stairs - 15 steps up and 15 steps down! More scary things.

In fact, climbing the stairs didn't present too many difficulties, but going down was a lot harder, particularly as I have to lean forwards with each step and lead with my bad (left) leg.

Upon reaching the top, I looked round and saw Bronze Beaver (Elaine Norman), who had come to visit me bearing chocolates. Elaine was able to watch my descent, with a very nervous Helen preventing me from falling forwards.

On Thursday morning, Fiona had introduced me to walking with a stick, which I preferred to the pole.

Progress for Priddy

It now looks as though my home visit will be deferred until next week, so I have to work even harder on my walking this week.

On the assumption that it will happen next week, I hope that I will shortly get the green light to go home permanently.

I was able to get home on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Another wonderful experience.

Progress is vital as it is now less than a month to the Priddy Folk Fayre, which is an important item on our annual agenda.

Many high calibre acts are booked to perform there, which I am eagerly anticipating.

Sparks over Frome!

In the interim, we have tickets for the one-day international cricket match against the Aussies, in Bristol on Sunday 19 June.

Our tickets are towards the back of the stand, and I am not confident that I will be able to get to and from my allocated seat. So we will need to discuss options for the disabled with Gloucestershire CCC.

I am reasonably satisfied with my progress to date, but remain frustrated that there is not the slightest flicker of movement in my left hand and arm.

Perhaps I should be connected to the National Grid and become electrified. If I do get switched on, I will do my best to go with the current.

Watch out for the sparks over Frome!
