A time of decision I will never forget

Louise Witherington

The sun slowly edged its way through the clouds, beaming rays of light in every direction and burning tiny stones on the ground like tomatoes on a frying pan. My mother was piling sun cream on my sister and also my cheeks, which were slowly turning a soft shade of crimson. My mother called us inside and automatically we thought it was lunch but today was different. My mother and father took us both into the kitchen and sat us down, giving us each a chocolate cookie, but at that moment I knew something was not right.

My mother carefully took a brochure out of her bag and slid it across the table towards us. It had a school printed across it in big green letters. Both of us just looked at it and went silent. At that moment my father explained that we might have to move to Edinburgh and change school. Hearing this, I felt a big lump in my throat and cried on my mother's knee. I could not understand why we would move. Every thing was perfect with school, friends and at home. I could not manage to take it in that we might be moving.

That night, I found it very difficult to sleep as questions kept flooding through my head; 'would I like it? Would I make friends? I then realised after a long night that we had to make a decision so I agreed to go and look at Edinburgh and the school.

The journey seemed to last a very long time in which I kept thinking that I did not want to leave my life in Glasgow behind, but as the day went on everything seemed to fall into place. As we drove round the corner towards the school I felt nervous and my eyes were glued to the window waiting to see it. From the outside it was very big and overwhelming which made me feel even more nervous, although this was changed once I saw inside. I was shown to my class and saw about twenty grinning faces looking at me which gave a warm feeling inside. I was shown to my class.
