A Memorable Day
Molly Woodward
I woke up early on Monday morning, and went to my cupboard to pick out my new St George's school uniform. My freshly ironed shirt, navy blue tunic and itchy, oversized cardigan hung on their hangers waiting for me to put them on for my first day after summer at my new school.
Mum drove me in quickly as I gobbled down the remainders of my breakfast in the back of the car, trying hard not to spill any of it.
I held my schoolbag close to me as I walked towards the Junior School building, nervous but excited. A girl about my age opened the door for me and I entered, waving farewell to my Mum as I did. "You must be new," she said with a broad smile on her face.
"Yes," I replied, shyly. "Well I'm Megan!" she announced.
"I'm Molly," I said back, my voice a little more confident this time.
I discovered that Megan was in my class, P3R, Mrs Robertson, and she kindly offered to guide me to our classroom.
Opening the classroom door, labelled with a bumblebee and "MRS ROBERTSON" in bold writing, I was met with a buzzing atmosphere of schoolgirls discussing what they had been up to over the holidays.
The many unfamiliar faces startled me at first but soon everyone began to welcome me with questions about my old school and stories from summer. Soon everyone was sharing and laughing, and for a moment I forgot that I was the 'new girl'.
Mrs Robertson soon silenced us and gestured for us to sit down. She handed out paper and asked us to think carefully about three occasions during the summer in which we learnt something new. I thought it was an excellent exercise and wrote enthusiastically about my experiences. The bell rang, and we all made our way outside to the playground. I noticed a girl sitting on the bench, eating her snack quite happily. She was a girl whom I recognised, from my Saturday morning swimming class. It was Anna! I raced over to her she turned and smiled as she saw me. It was so good to see someone I knew and any uncertainty about my first day I still had, soon disappeared as Anna and I started chatting. Once again, the loud school bell rang and we made our way back to our classrooms to resume our lessons for the rest of the morning.
By lunch, I was really enjoying myself. I entered the hall confidently with my tray held tight in my hands. I saw Anna on a circular table at the far end of the lunch centre, alongside Megan and other members of my class and so I joined them.
After our lunch break, in which I had an entertaining game of tig in, Mrs Robertson sent us off to the RMC for our music period. Mrs Masson introduced herself, and although I was a bit worried by meeting another teacher, I soon realised that I had nothing to be afraid of and that Mrs Masson was very kind and made the lesson very interesting, as far as Primary 3 recorder playing goes.
I went to the cloakroom and collected my blazer and schoolbag, and skipped joyfully outside. Mum was waiting for me, talking, as usual, to another parent. I ran up to her and gave her a tremendous hug.
"I love it!" I said, followed by a giggle.
