When My Brother Cut My Hair

Dayna Susanne McKenna

The most remembered memory of my childhood was when my brother cut my hair. In 1999, when I was four years old, I had long, curly, blonde hair. My mum said it looked like princess hair but after 1999 I have never had hair like that again!

On a Tuesday night in 1999 I came home from nursery in a happy mood. I got a gold star in behaviour. That day my hair was in pigtails and when I got home I took the pigtails out and my hair was all curly. When my brother got home from primary school we both had a snack. It was the usual jam sandwich.

My brother Richard is two years older than me and when he was little he was such a trouble maker.

It was five o'clock and it was time for my nap. Before I brushed my teeth my brother came in with a pair of scissors. He said to me, 'would you like to look like me?; before I got to answer he held the scissors up to my face and held up a bit of my hair and cut it!

Because I was so young I didn't really care that I looked like a boy but my mum; what a different story!

Ten minutes past by and my mum was wondering where I was and what I was doing. When she got into the bathroom she screamed so loudly that the neighbours heard her.

All she could see was loads of my hair on the floor and me holding scissors. My brother heard my mum coming and ran away. My mum was crying her eyes out and all I said was, 'I look like my brother now!'

The next day my mum took me to the hairdressers. The only thing the hairdresser could do was cut it even shorter to get it even. When I was finished, my hair was shorter than my ears!

When I got home I was quite surprised with my hair. My mum couldn't stop crying but I didn't mind my hair at all.

A few years later my brother finally told the truth that he cut my hair. My mum couldn't stop laughing but I didn't find it that funny. That day my brother was grounded and had to do the dishes for a whole month! That was what I found funny. Ever since my brother cut my hair I have had my hair short. I like it better that way and it suits me best.
