Two Stones

Anonymous

I met Sara 10 years ago, when we were very young. We were penpals. Straight away there was a connection, our feelings, our ideas, our views. I had always felt truly comfortable with her, and the one person I could completely open up to. We met after 5 years; it was a very special time for both of us. On this beautiful summer's night, the sky was a deep dark blue filled with stars. Myself, Sara, her brother Piero and cousin Marco took a walk along a trail to an old bauxite mine, which was in the form of a crater that was now half filled with water. We had an idea, that we would each find a stone, make a wish, count to three and throw into the water. The four of us turned our backs on the water, all counted to three and threw the stones behind us...silence. . .a few faint crickets. Splash! A wish hit the water...Splash! Another wish hit the water. We cheered above the commiseration that two wishes were lost forever. We all headed back to the car, and drove to the salento coast. With Marco armed with his guitar, we bought some food, wine and some bottles of beer and headed down to the beach. The night air was beautiful, so still, the sound of the sea lapping up against the shore brought a calmness to the coast. After some fire starting difficulties, eventually there was light. We sat, drank, talked, sang...and enjoyed each others company. Piero and Marco left to give time for Myself and Sara, we talked for a while, both holding back, unsure how each other felt...although we both knew. It was then that I told her of my wish, that tonight we would kiss. To this day I have never seen anyone smile the way Sara did at that moment. She was beautiful. Her eyes light up as she said, It was the same for me! We decided that it was our stones that hit the water earlier and our wish would be granted. We hadn't spoke or written since a little after that time, only briefly, here and there. But always with the same passion. In two months time we have arranged to meet again. It feels different for us this time, somehow deeper. I can only let you, the reader, decide for yourself what the outcome will be or was. I know I'm walking on the right road, and perhaps, perhaps there is a destiny out there for us all.
