The Window

Alex Chiverton

"I'm bored," sighed Wil as he turned his portable PS2 off.

"Well, we could go and see the mums and dad?" I suggested but knew Ellie and Will wouldn't agree to it.

It was our last night at Feshy Bridge, a small R.A.F. lodge in the middle of a forest. It had no TV or radio only a living room, kitchen and five bedrooms. But it was great.

All the younger ones had gone to bed so we couldn't be noisy. "I know!" shouted Ellie but quickly covered her mouth. "Lets go outside, "she said a bit quieter this time.

"But mum said not to go out. And its 11:30pm!" said Wil bitterly.

"Yeah, well we'll climb out the window." I smiled smugly. I knew we were going to end up doing something fun.

With a quick click of the window it swung open and a cool breeze filled the room. Ellie signalled that she was going to be first out the window and quickly jumped through it. I went next. The window wasn't very big so we had to duck through it. I landed onto the crisp grass and the woods around me looked eerie and dark.

"You're sure we won't get into trouble?" asked Wil cautiously before he stepped onto the grass.

"Eh, no! But oh well." Ellie skipped into the woods. Will shrugged and hopped off the window ledge. As we walked along the path the ends of the trees looked like spindled fingers as they waved in the breeze.

"Eew look at the bat," I said, pointing up at the sky. The small black silhouettes were fluttering and squawking.

After a while we got cold and hungry so we headed back to the lodge. When we got back to the lodge we ran around the corner to get to our window. "Oh no," said Wil. As I came around tile corner my heart sunk. The window was closed, locked. Ellie tried pushing it open but it wouldn't budge.

"But we left it open. Who was last out? Wil! You were last out you - screamed Ellie angrily.

"I don't think Wil shut the window Ellie. So who shut it?" I said quickly cutting Ellie off. "Oh well. We'll just go through the front door."

So, off we went round a corner, over a small hedge and up the concrete steps. I turned the cold metal handle and something clicked. I smiled and pulled the door hut nothing happened. I frowned and heaved the door with all my might but nothing moved.

"Alex, why is the door not open?" snapped Ellie her face turned red with rage but her head suddenly dropped with disappointment.

"We're locked out?! It's 2:30 am! We can't be locked out!" cried Wil. The expression on his face was very worried looking but it was very funny to look at.

Then a knock came from the kitchen window. Our dads were laughing and pointing and they slowly lifted up a key. It was the key to our window! Ellie grinned and started to laugh, then we all laughed and with a quick click the door flew open. 'There stood our parents, laughing, smiling anti looking very smug.
