Circling Cows

Lucy Skeldon

I remember a time when I went a walk in Perth with my mum, my dog, my brother, my granny and my papa. I was really tired that day so I couldn't be bothered to do on a walk that would last hours. It was very hot and the sun was shining through the sky, it felt as if there was a magnifying glass aimed at me on one side and the sun on the other.

We walked and walked and still didn't seem to reach the car. We went up-hill and down-hill and through what seemed like never-ending forest and still didn't reach the car. I was jealous of those people who were sitting down resting and those who were walking down-hill as I was struggling up hill against gravity.

I could hear the birds in the trees and horses hooves trotting. I could hear a waterfall and aeroplane carrying people to various destinations flying in the sky. The thought of people lying down resting made we want to scream!

We came to a fence with two steps on each side; my legs were aching and I struggled over the fence. There was a small stream that we all had to jump over and there was a very large field. It was very scary as there was a creeping mist hovering on the grass like in a scary movie. I was frightened. There was a herd of cows-possible fifty of them-and they stared at us with their vacant eyes. My dog looked even more frightened than me, but for protection he barked and barked. This made the cows curious and made them come closer. I started to cry, screaming make the dog be quiet!! My mum was nearly in tears as well. They were a metre away, all circled around us. When my papa, with his walking stick in his right hand, pushed out his chest and screamed 'SHOO!' All the cows scarpered to another field. I ran to the next fence with two steps on each side.

I was in shock; not breathing properly and not thinking where I was going or how anybody else felt. My family were asking how I was feeling but I didn't answer. We walked on and I was going over and over it again. I still couldn't believe what had happened!

I read this story over and over and think back and laugh about it, but it really wasn't funny at the time.
