Best Friends

Madeleine Miller

I awoke with a slight confusions and was willing to go back to sleep. According to my parents, we were almost there. The black and white animal on my lap had moved constantly, trying to find the comfiest spot in which to sleep. I looked outside into the deep dark atmosphere around me. I started to wander where we were. I soon discovered that we were on the road, almost there. We had been travelling for an hour and I sat there, wishing that my parents would get lost on the road and make the journey last longer. The road was gloomy and felt as if it would suddenly stop in the few seconds left. The trees had hung over the car, staring at us wondering who we were and why we were there. And then I saw it. The house stood in front of me. It was tall and traditional. Upon the roof was a family of crows, squawking at a new arrival. The windows were a cream colour that must have been white. Around them sat the ivy. It had strangled the house making sure that no colour could ever be seen again. Around it, sat a tree. Their branches were hanging with it's hands stretching out, trying to welcome us into it's surroundings. The beady eyes of the dog in the car had sprung open confidently wondering where we were, we stopped. I did not wish to put one foot of the car. It was two late. A woman had appeared from nowhere opening her arms, welcoming us into her house.

A tear had trickled from my eye. The moment that I dreaded most was about to arrive. I was resentful about letting my friend go. I opened the door, making him jump from my lap and move on to the stony path. The lady introduced herself as Winnie. My confidence had risen slowly by then, knowing that we would be safe there. We moved into the living room where a huge couch bulged out at me. The dog looked confident yet I felt a strong sense of anxiety. The moment was getting closer to becoming reality.

I never wanted to talk to this woman ever again. I wanted to be alone with him. I decided to play with him for the last time and so investigated to try and hide my emotions from everyone. I crawled upstairs as if I were a spider looking for my prey yet I found nothing but a couple of bedrooms and a bathroom. I had moved myself from upstairs to outside and decided to walk on the beach, five minutes down the road. As I stepped out of the front door, cold air rushed into me which made me want to go back inside.

The waves swished under my feet as I walked relentlessly along the beach and the sand swept into the sea. It was just as if an invisible broom had brushed the sand into the ocean. Slowly, I made my way back to the house and rejoined my parents. Unfortunately, the moment had come.

My parents, my sister and I left the house, the dog stayed behind. I had lost my dog and my best friend Russell.
