My best rugby game

Billy Dineen

It was a Friday morning and I raced out of bed because the First year A team and First Fifteen had been invited to the Ospreys vs. Edinburgh game at Murryfield and the First years were playing at half time, and I wanted to get to school early because I knew I was one step closer to playing.

It was the first lesson of the day and I was sitting there staring at the clock every minute wondering how long of this very boring lesson was left. Then finally the bell rang and I was out of my seat with my bag and out the door as fast as lightning. Now I had Business and that was boring anyway but now it seemed as if time had stopped and this lesson was never going to end with the teacher going on and on and on and on. Finally, the best sound in the world for me that day was the ringing bell. It was the third lesson of the day and we were drawing 3D shapes and colouring them in with different tones in Technology. At the moment I was really excited and I went off in a day dream and all of a sudden the bell went and I had hardly done any work! I had English after lunch and we didn't do much work because we were just talking about what we were going to be doing in the next few lessons which went very quickly and the bell went. It was now the final lesson of the day, and I was bursting with excitement because it was only 4 hours until kick off. I was in Science which was pretty good because we were just doing practical work and time went very quickly and then the sound I had been waiting for: the bell that ends the day of school.

A team mate called Craig and I went down town after school to buy our tea since there was no point in us going home because as soon as we got home we would just have to leave again to make it in time for the bus. So after we had eaten our lunch there was about the whole team staying late and one of them had a rugby ball so we started to play some touch rugby because we didn't want to get injured and miss our match at Murryfield! We were on the bus and as we were just going out of the school grounds one of the first fifteen boys shouted, 'Wait!' and the bus stopped and two of the first fifteen boys got on the bus with everyone laughing at them as they walked up the bus because they almost missed it. It wasn't a very long bus journey but as we got near Edinburgh we could feel how excited everybody was about playing.

The game was half an hour away from kick off and we were all seated and watching the professionals warm up. Finally the game kicked off and it was a very boring first half with the only good action in the first five minutes when the Ospreys scored and converted a try and the rest of the half was very boring. About five minutes from the end of the first half our coach came and got us ready to warm up in a tunnel and then as the teams were coming off we were going onto the pitch and the floodlight was blinding us as we walked on and then we kicked off and it was only a short game and it was over very quickly - we drew with two tries each. Our coach got us off the pitch quickly so the game could kick off again. Even though the game only lasted a few minutes it was still the best thing that had ever happened to me.

The main game finished and the score was thirteen all with the Ospreys kicker missing the winning kick. It was very late and we were just passing Dunfermline and some very annoying people decided to start counting down how many seconds it was until the next minute. By the time we got back to the school it was well past midnight and as we got off, our coach just reminded us that we had another rugby match in ten hours so to get some sleep. I was just about to go to sleep and I thought to myself that today had been a day to remember.
