My Special Day
Catriona Murray
2006
A special day to me was when I first saw my baby cousin Lucy. It was really my cousins baby but she is family all the same.
It was the first of October 2006 and my family, including my brother, Mum, Dad and dog were making our way to West Kilbride in Ayrshire to visit my Auntie (on my Dads side). I knew that baby Lucy was going to be there even though she was just two days old along with my cousin and her boyfriend.
When we got in there were all kinds of relatives but no baby. Theyre stuck in traffic my auntie told me. Once we had all settled in and sat down the door opened. My cousin came in holding a baby carrier that was black with a dark blue cover.
She put the carrier on the floor and stood back. My heart skipped a beat, there she was nestled up in her little white blanket and she had a pink hat on. Her eyes were closed because she was sleeping, her tiny pink finger the size of a paperclip clutching onto her blanket.
After everyone had given my cousin her baby presents she suggested to me and a different cousin Ansley to take Lucy out for a walk in her buggy down the road. Lucy was strapped up ready for a walk even though she was still sleeping I was frightened she would wake up but I didnt want to complain.
Since Ansley was twelve and I was only ten she got to push the buggy first, I didnt mind but secretly I just wanted to hold her in my arms but I knew I shouldnt take her out of the buggy so I left her alone.
Then it was my turn we both pushed her to the end of the road and stopped and looked down at her for a second. She was as pretty as a flower in full bloom and I couldnt believe how such a tiny person could sleep for so long when people have been peering down at her. That moment I will never forget in my entire life.
Lucy is now a year old, coming up two in late September. Ive seen her many times after that day. She is growing bigger every time I see her but that day I will always remember.
