Birthdays
Harriet Pritchard
Don't you just love birthdays? My 8th birthday started just like the rest of them. I had spent a sleepless night being excited and now it was my birthday! I was sitting in my mum and dad's bed surrounded by wrapping paper. Wow!! A purple game boy! And a game to go with it! Also a pretty dress! I am very happy! The day gets better. My mum says we are going out, but she doesn't say where. "Put your new dress on!" she tells me.
We have been driving in the car for what seems like ages, but I'm happy because I have my game boy! My dad stops the car. "Here we are!" he says.
I don't understand. We are outside a church. There are lots of people walking about. Suddenly I see my friend Charlotte running towards me. I'm so happy because I haven't seen her for ages! I ask her why she is there. She tells me that it is her little brother's christening. I'm excited because I've never been to a christening before!
The church is decorated very prettily, and Joshua looks very cute in his christening outfit! The ceremony is very boring, but I try to sit up straight and look grown up. It seems to go on for ages, but at last it's finished. It's time for the party!
We have another journey in the car. This one doesn't take as long. The party is at a posh golf club. It is all decorated inside. There are lots of white streamers and christening banners and balloons. Everybody is standing about with glasses of champagne and talking excitedly. There are lots of tables of yummy food, and in the centre of one of the tables is the cake! It's massive and covered in blue icing. It's decorated with 'HAPPY CHRISTENING!' in white icing and it has little boots and other decorations. Me and charlotte fill our plates and go and sit on one of the comfy sofas by the windows over looking the green. We watch the golfers and laugh at their funny trousers! One of the adults come over and give us a little glass of champagne each. I take a sip of it. I've never had champagne before. It's fizzy and has a funny taste. I'm not sure if I like it but I drink it anyway! We muck about pretending to be posh ladies and sticking our pinkies in the air. We eat until we're full and then we run round and round, chasing each other. Then the music starts and we all go and have a little dance. Me and Charlotte dance crazy dances, and I'm so happy because it's been a great day!
But then the party's nearly finished and they're cutting the cake. Me Charlotte and my sister all have a slice and share the boots. It is delicious! Mum says that it is time to go, but she's arranged with Charlottes mum to meet up again soon! We say our goodbyes and then get back into the car to drive home. Well that's what I think!
My dad stops the car outside a nice restaurant. Turns out I'm getting a birthday tea as well! I have a lovely meal, but I'm disappointed when I'm told I can't have a dessert! Then we get back into the car and travel home. We eventually get home. We go into the house. I get told to go and sit on the sofa. I hear my mum and dad in the kitchen. Suddenly they start singing, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!"
I'm so happy. It's time for my cake! It's a chocolate caterpillar cake, with an icing face and little feet. I have the slice with the face on. The cake is great! This has been the best birthday EVER!!!!
