Benarty Hill

Callum Munro

It was August 2008, the best day of my life. It was a Friday in the fleeing summer holidays. Excitedly I raised my self from bed and opened the blinds; this was going to be a good day. I had it all planed out, two of my cousins and I were going up the Benarty hill. Benarty hill is a long hill with the resemblance of a sleeping giant waiting to awaken.

I went down stairs and made myself a hot cup of coffee and two slices of toast. The weather was warm but overcast with small patches of blue shining clear brightly, good weather for Scotland's standards! Loch Leven was looking wonderful, as usual, and the soft wind was blowing in the trees quietly.

I quickly got dressed and started looking for the lead for the dog, which was always losing itself! I found the lead and let the Dougal (my dog) out of the garage. Dougal then jumped around me as he did every morning and was determined to attract as much attention as possible, he's a Scottish deer hound and it is hard not to give him attention as he is a very large dog. At a varied pace we then set of on our walk that Dougal loves. He loves it because there are many other dogs and their owners on the path, and it is very hard to keep 50kg of dog at my feet. The walk that we loved was soon over and panting Dougal returned to bed.

When I had come back in the house after the walk mum told me while on my walk my Aunty Hannah had phoned to tell me I was invited to my Cousin Jack's birthday party. It was on later that day and I was going to my other cousin's house so she could go to work.

She drove us round to my Cousin Josh's house, a nice flat roofed house with creepers and a friendly atmosphere. I came in and Paddy their dog bounded around me because he smelt Dougal whom I had just walked. We mucked around in the garden then took Paddey on a walk. It was a winding path surrounded by ferns and grass and plenty of things for Paddy to smell and do. We walked for about half an hour and returned back to the house.

Soon after the walk we left for Jack's house, and arrived just in time for the water fight. Matthew was there he was coming on our little trip up the hill. There were plenty of water balloons and we were in teams and ran around his big garden throwing them. We then had a BBQ and had burgers and sausages and loads of juice.

Then Aunt Ruth arrived and took us to her house where we were going to leave for the hill. We were all wet so we had to borrow some of Matthews clothes, Matthew is 17, we looked so stupid in our clothes and had to walk up a road at one point.

Once we got onto the path it was fine we set off on the long path winding up the side of the hill in some places it was very overgrown and the nettles were up to our armpits! We had to wade through the nettles and long grass. Finally we reached the top and the further we walked the better the view got (until we got to a cliff). The view was amazing we could see the whole loch I'm not usually enthusiastic about views but it was blowing me away! After enthusiastic chatter we quickly set up the tent and found a small dip which we could sit in and light the BBQ s. The BBQ s made a nice warmth and we sat there very contently and ate the sausages with ketchup. My favourite day was almost over but when I got out of the dip I saw all the lights of Fife like a gigantic fire work display. Now it could be over, I was happy for it to end. That's a day I will never forget, I am 13 that will be my favourite day for a long time.
