How to spot a wasp spider

The arachnids are recent arrivals to Worcestershire thanks to climate change. Their bloated black-and-yellow abdomen is said to resemble the winged insect, most common amongst females.

The Argiope bruennichi are recent arrivals from Europe and more tropical climes. It builds large webs in grasses and heathlands. Mating for males is dangerous, many are often eaten by females.

Wendy Carter from Worcestershire Wildlife Trust was one of the first to officially spot the species in the county and tells Tammy Gooding how the spiders, despite being colourful, are not venomous or harmful to humans.
