Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Violin Concerto

Linton Stephens showcases outstanding performances from across the UK and Europe.

The Music is Black. As part of the BBC’s collaboration with the V&A East Museum exhibition, Radio 3 is celebrating the music of Black British composers and artists across the week. A specially commissioned new work inspired by the exhibition, "On the Shoulder of Aunties and Uncles", composed by Segun Akinola and recorded by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, will be premiered and showcased throughout the week, alongside other great music from Black British composers and favourite classical tracks performed by Black British artists.

Linton continues his week on Classical Live with visits to festivals in Switzerland and Denmark today, featuring performances of Josef Suk’s Piano Quintet and of Samuel Barber’s intensely emotive Adagio for Strings with conductor Wayne Marshall. Anthony Marwood joins the BBC Philharmonic for a performance of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Violin Concerto, while Vox Luminis and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra join forces in a glorious cantata by Telemann. We’ll also hear music by Shostakovich and Joan Tower from The Ulster Orchestra, and a 17th-Century nightingale flies in to sing for us in the form of Radio 3’s current New Generation Baroque Ensemble – The Bellot Ensemble.
