In the Victorian era, the residents of the house on Calton Hill include Thomas Mains, a maker of expensive shoes whose customers won’t pay. His wife, Ann, eventually takes the customers to court after his death.
There's also Thomas Glen, a world-famous bagpipe maker who runs a musical instrument shop in the city, an early photographer, Archibald Burns, and a notorious brothel keeper, the mysterious Catherine Johnston.
