The richest man in Vienna has commissioned an evening’s entertainment. But when an opera and a comedy troupe are forced to share the same stage, all bets are off. Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos is part farce, part dream-like fantasy, set to one of the composer’s most luscious scores. It comes fresh from the Glyndebourne Festival, performed complete at the Proms for the first time in nearly half a century.
