Donald Macleod journeys through the early years of Alice Mary Smith, with guests Ian Graham-Jones and Leanne Langley. Macleod charts Smith’s background and training with tutors from the Royal Academy of Music, as well as her composing her first symphony for performance by the Musical Society of London - musicologists have argued that Smith was the first women in Britain to compose a symphony. Each programme throughout the week will include recordings of music by Smith, specially made by the BBC.
