Volunteers Putting Faith into Action

Claire McCollum is in south London meeting Christians who are volunteering their time and talents to help others.

Ahead of the national Big Help Out and Big Lunch initiatives, which encourage people to get together and volunteer, Claire McCollum is in south London meeting Christians giving their time and talents to help others.

Claire dons her rubber gloves and meets the twin brothers gaining millions of followers online thanks to their determination to clean places often overlooked. She joins them to clean a playground and hears how their faith drives them on to do good in the community.

We meet the Christian in Lancashire putting the power of the pedal into action to help tackle loneliness. When he was a pioneer priest, Andrew Kesiak came up with the idea of offering rickshaw rides to help those who struggle to get out of the house to experience the joy of nature and being with others.

Claire then meets Sylvia Wachuku-King in her local Catholic church in Croydon, where volunteers regularly host huge community lunches. She tells Claire how important it is to celebrate diversity and different cultures by bringing people together over a meal, and how she encourages people to share dishes from their home countries.
