BBCi wins Grand Prix at the AFDESI Awards

BBCi, the BBC's interactive TV service, picked up three prestigious awards at the AFDESI Interactive TV Awards including the Grand Prix.

The interactive version of Waking The Dead scooped two awards, for Best Design and Best Set Top Box Application.

The BBC's Multiplatform Productions, BBC Vision team – along with Future Media & Technology and BBC Drama – produced the ground-breaking and innovative service, which accompanied the popular BBC One crime drama earlier this year.

The Waking The Dead interactive service on digital satellite was technically advanced for the project. Through using zoom and visual fades, within the application, the team created a world in which the audience was in control – offering them a unique and immersive user experience, with production values matching the quality of the main TV programme.

The BBC also won the Grand Prix for its contribution to interactive TV services for 2006/7, a year in which it also was awarded an International Emmy for its BBCi service, now used by over 11 million UK viewers a week.

Rahul Chakkara, BBC Controller of TV Platforms, said: "We are delighted to have received three such prestigious awards. The BBC has always been committed to offering a quality and innovative interactive television service and these awards prove that the industry recognises our on going efforts."

AFDESI, the interactive TV professional organisation, received 92 applications, from 17 countries, for the International Interactive TV Awards 2007 – the most famous competition for the IdTV community.

The awards ceremony took place at the Hotel Rey Juan Carlos on 30 October 2007 in Barcelona, Spain.
