Radio 2 Young Choristers Of The Year 2007 – winners announced

Charlotte Louise McKechnie and Joel Whitewood were named BBC Radio 2 Young Choristers Of The Year 2007.

Charlotte (15), from Giffnock South Church in Scotland, and Joel (12), from Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, won the coveted titles at the final held at St Paul's Cathedral in London.

The eight finalists – four boys and four girls – performed a sacred song and a hymn in front of a live audience and a judging panel chaired by celebrated composer John Rutter and featuring Catherine, Duchess of Kent, celebrity vocal coach Carrie Grant and singer Jonathan Ansell (formerly of vocal group G4).

Each of the winners received a trophy and the opportunity to appear on Radio 2's Good Morning Sunday, Sunday Half Hour and BBC Radio 4's Daily Service programmes. They also have the chance to appear on BBC One's Songs Of Praise.

Charlotte, winner of the girl's category, said: "I am completely overwhelmed and I feel so honoured, it's such a privilege because everyone here is so talented. Just to get here and sing in this wonderful building is great enough, but to win is unbelievable."

The final was hosted by Songs Of Praise and Good Morning Sunday presenter Aled Jones and will be broadcast on Radio 2 on Sunday 4 November at 8pm.
